The Motsett Family
Melissa contacted me a couple weeks ago about taking pictures of her kids. She wanted something rustic and fun that would let her kids' personalities shine through. These kids definitely had no problem showing their personality! All three of them were so sweet and had no problem humoring me while I made them play stupid games like "who can laugh the loudest?" and "everyone look at the person with the messiest room!" We had a lot of fun, and it was actually really amazing how many great pictures we got in a short amount of time. When I do an engagement shoot or senior portrait, we walk around to all sorts of locations, really taking our time and trying new things because we can! With kids, it's very different! Everything is so fast. At one point I remember saying, "Hm, let's try some photos over by that wall." And boom! They were bolting for that wall. I had to run to keep up.
The other thing I loved about these kids was their perfect stair step height difference. They kept lining up in age order and creating this amazing diagonal that made me laugh. Sometimes I'd mix them up, but just imagine how amused they'll be when they're all grown up and looking back at this unique time in their lives. Yeah, I really do think about these things while I'm shooting. To me, photography is so DEEP ;)
I always warn moms that I keep the "outtakes" too. I know how much moms love their kids and sometimes it's perfectly unposed pictures like these that really remind you who these kids are. I remember getting our family portraits done once and the photographer didn't release all the pictures, just what you bought on print, unless you felt like buying the proofbook. My mom bought the proof book because it drove her crazy knowing there were pictures of her kids out in the world that she didn't have. I always keep that in mind when I do family photos.
